The Habesha

Project

At University I became involved with a The Habesha Project. The Habesha Project is a neutral, non-profit, non-political, and non-faith based international Mexican-led humanitarian initiative aimed at sending a message of solidarity to the Syrian nation. The project's objective is to provide university placement to 30 Syrian students displaced by conflict. The main problem was that the project faced opposition from the government, which didn’t want to “take sides” in the conflict, and indifference from many students who felt statistics and facts about the conflict too abstract to grasp and actually understand.

My friend Andrea, who's an architect (check her out here!), and I set out to overcome these problems with an art installation that used scale and interactivity to make the conflict more palpable.

We displayed the art installation in various universities and we help students understand more about the conflict and we gain their support. There's still a long way to go, but thanks to everyone's effort 10 Syrian students are now studying at Mexican universities.
